Venice to roll out a tourism tax to stop overcrowding

Venice is rolling out a tourism tax to try to stop overcrowding on peak weekends.

Last November, Venice authorities unveiled a pilot program for their plan to charge day-trippers to visit the city.

The tourist tax was due to launch earlier in the year. But the delay was over logistical issues and fears it would hit tourist revenue.

The council has now confirmed the launch of the online payment platform that tourists will have to use to book tickets.

The portal is live as of 12 pm GMT on 16 January. Visitors to Venice will use the site to receive a QR code to be shown to officials conducting checks in the city.

The entry fee aims to reduce crowds, encourage longer visits and improve quality of life for residents.

Why a tourist tax?

The rollout of the tourist tax comes after Venice narrowly escaped being placed on UNESCO’s danger list last year. It is because overtourism causes damage on its delicate ecosystem.

Member states cited the proposed new entry fee in deciding to spare Venice from the list.

Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro said that the fee is not an attempt to bring in extra revenue.

Rather, it is a ‘first-of-its-kind experiment’ to regulate tourist flows in one of the world’s most-visited places.

The aim of the charge is to incentivise visitors to avoid high-traffic periods and come on other days.

“Our attempt is to make a more livable city,” he said at a news conference outlining the pilot program.

When will visitors have to pay?

Starting this year, visitors will have to pay a fee of €5 to enter the fragile lagoon city.

The charge will be in place on peak weekends and other days between April and mid-July – 29 days in total.

The day-tripper fee will be in force during peak hours from 8:30 am until 4 pm, meaning visitors who come into Venice for dinner or a concert won’t have to pay.

Who has to book a ticket?

A host of exemptions apply to the entry fee system.

Those who don’t have to pay the day-tripper tourist tax include residents, Venetian-born visitors, students and workers, as well as tourists who have hotel or other lodging reservations.

How can I book my ticket?

As of 16 January, visitors can ‘reserve’ their day in Venice on a dedicated platform.

Day trippers pay €5 and get a QR code that will then be checked at spot controls at seven access points around the city, including at the main train station.

Visitors with hotel reservations enter their hotel information and also get a QR code to show.

They don’t have to pay, however, since their hotel bill will already include a Venice lodging fee.

How is Venice making tourism more sustainable?

After COVID-19 lockdowns devastated its tourism industry, Venice has been trying to rethink its relationship with visitors in a more sustainable way.

It is also seeking to incentivise its residents to stay put.

The city has been forced to take action in response to the steady exodus of Venetians to the mainland.

After pressure from UNESCO and environmentalists, authorities have finally banned big cruise ships from sailing past St Mark’s Square and through the Giudecca canal.

Venice has been pointing to longer-term tourists as key to its survival since they tend to spend more.

Brugnaro said in no way does the new day-tripper contribution discourage tourism overall, but just seeks to manage it better.

He acknowledged the visitor program will probably have glitches and will need to be amended. But he said that after years of study and talk, it was time to roll it out.

Sri Lankan personalities demand more consistent travel advice from FCDO

One of the top tourism providers from Sri Lanka and the UK have called for the government to improve the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office travel guidance concerning the safety issues of the nationals of UK in abroad.

Today, in an open letter that was unveiled, current advice is branded excessively harsh by the said campaigners who find the government guilty for methodically discouraging the travel industry in Sri Lanka and asks for an improved approach to attain consistency.

The former Captains of the Sri Lankan Cricket Team, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, have signed the open letter compiled by an important travel company, Experience Travel Group.

Also, the said open letter details about the impact on the tourism industry of Sri Lanka, which at present employs more than 380,000 people in 2023. The campaign asserts that the suggestion could injure Sri Lanka’s tourism, harmfully impacting one in five people in Sri Lanka who depend on tourism generated income. 

The Co-founder and Managing Director of Experience Travel Group, Sam Clark, says that it is clear that the travel advice of FCDO is no longer appropriate for purpose in regards to Sri Lanka.

Iberia Group achieves remarkable resolution for 91% of 45,000 passengers affected by strike

The unions’ strike scheduled for January 5th to 8th, coinciding with the Three Kings holiday, resulted in over 400 flight cancellations by Iberia, Iberia Express, and Air Nostrum, impacting 45,641 passengers. Nevertheless, the Iberia Group successfully addressed the concerns of 90.9% of affected travelers.

Since the initiation of unavoidable cancellations, Iberia, Iberia Express, and Air Nostrum diligently worked to reaccommodate passengers on alternative flights to minimize travel disruptions.

As of now, alternative travel arrangements have been secured for 36,621 passengers, covering 80.2% of those affected. The airline continues its efforts to relocate the remaining passengers, considering the challenges posed by the post-Christmas period and high flight occupancy rates.

In addition to managing the relocations, the airline addressed the requests of 4,900 passengers (10.7%) who opted to change their travel dates or seek refunds to mitigate the strike-related inconveniences.

Juan Cierco, Iberia’s Corporate Director, emphasized the significant impact of the strike, expressing the impossibility of rescheduling flights due to the technical complexities and the already-provided alternative arrangements for passengers.

Customers seeking changes can still process requests through Iberia’s website, the original travel agencies, or the Customer Service Centre, although longer wait times may be expected. Iberia encourages early check-ins online and advises customers to allow extra time at airports due to anticipated disruptions.

Iberia expresses gratitude for customers’ understanding and patience, extending apologies for inconveniences caused by the strike initiated by airport services unions.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines Donates £2,000 to Headway Suffolk

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines contributed a £2,000 grant to Headway Suffolk as a part of the funding provided by the Suffolk Community Foundation.

Headway Suffolk, a charity dedicated to assisting individuals recovering from strokes, brain injuries, and other neurological conditions, utilized the donation for their Art for the Mature Person Project.

This project employs art as a therapeutic approach to aid individuals in recovering motor skills, improving concentration, and fostering a sense of joy.

Helen Fairweather, CEO of Headway Suffolk, said:

“Our primary goal is to preserve lives and facilitate the reconstruction of individuals affected by strokes and brain injuries.

“We are dedicated to providing people with a high quality of life and supporting them in rebuilding their lives.

“Sustaining our art programmes and maintaining centres is crucial to achieving these objectives.

“However, in these challenging times, securing funding has become arduous, and we are incredibly grateful to the generous donors, like Fred. Olsen Cruise lines, who step forward to support our cause.

“These contributions play a vital role in enabling us to carry out our impactful work.”

The charity, which has bases in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Hadleigh, is looking to expand with satellites in towns including Newmarket, Haverhill, Sudbury and Leiston, and eventually to encompass the whole of Suffolk.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines established the Fred. Olsen Community Fund in collaboration with Suffolk Community Foundation last year, thanks to a generous donation from parent company, Bonheur.

This fund was created to support initiatives close to the company’s heart, including maritime organisations, art groups and projects helping local communities.
